Along with our partners, Sangrad + AVP, Flansburgh won first place in the international competition for the design of the Središće educational complex in Zagreb, Croatia. The complex consists of a new campus for the American International School of Zagreb as well as a Croatian Kindergarten and a Croatian Elementary School.
From the street, the three schools are designed to appear similar to one another, and to respond to the clean lines of Novi Zagreb, the modernist neighborhood where the school is located. From the inside, however, the design is more playful, with courtyards punched into each building to introduce natural light and green space into the heart of the school.
The American School is organized to facilitate collaboration, flexible use of spaces, and informal interaction. Classrooms are organized around a flexible interior core, which contains the cafeteria, library, and informal learning spaces. A grand stair in the cafeteria can support presentations and informal performances, and classrooms open onto informal learning spaces which can be used for break-out, meeting space, and collaborative activities between multiple classes.
