This combined, award-winning middle/high school incorporates a unique kiva-centered classroom plan within a traditional New England ‘house-and-barn’ scheme.
The ‘house’ contains separate entrances, administration offices, and classroom zones for middle and high school programs, and a shared media center. Located in the ‘barn’ are a cafeteria; large and small gymnasia; and a performing arts wing featuring a 700-seat auditorium, choral/band practice rooms, and a community-use entrance.
The house plan organizes groups of eight five-sided classrooms around central ‘kivas’ equipped with multimedia consoles and pull-down screens. With stepped seating for up to 60 students, the kivas provide each grade level with immediate access to team teaching and presentation space.
