Design for Mixed-Use Development | Greater Noida, India

This 62,750 square meter mixed use scheme uses the 8-meter structural bay spacing as an organizing theme that is economical to build and brings unity to the overall project. WORK spaces occupy the site perimeter. PLAY spaces occupy the center courtyard and LIVING spaces are elevated above the site, oriented towards Delhi with views overlooking the Yamuna River. WORK, PLAY and LIVING spaces are woven together with 8-meter wide threads of undulating landscape. This dynamic modulation in time and space gives the ambience of an Indian Bazaar, where the drama of each day unfolds. Below these landscaped threads exists a warren of interiors derived from traditional Indian cities. On top exists a park-like setting with groves of trees and a meandering path that gradually ascends from the eastern edge of the site to the western edge. The path culminates at large tranquil pool that becomes a virtual extension of the Yamuna River over the embankment and into the site. Above the pool, an iconic form is created with the dramatic intersection of the hotel and the apartments. The horizontal hotel building is lifted 40 meters above the ground, rotated off the structural grid and oriented toward Delhi.

The scheme includes five unique characteristics of an emerging Indian architecture. The distinctive building profile - silhouetted against the sky – expresses a connection to larger India and the cosmos beyond. Roof, water, natural landscape are integrated - actually interwoven - into the fabric of the buildings. Arrival to the project can be at a higher level (on top of the undulating landscape), or at a lower level (below the undulating landscape in a bazaar-like world) to express duality. Movements within the project shift direction in plan and elevation to give unexpected experiences and ambiguous impressions. Architectural expression includes the casting of shadows, breaking of mass, rhythms in structure and solids and voids, like traditional Indian architecture.
