Members of the Saigon South International School (SSIS) community as well as stakeholders and project partners gathered this past week for the official ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new STEAM Design Center and Middle School. This ceremony marks a brand new chapter for the school, allowing students to further delve into the studies of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.
Flansburgh was commissioned by SSIS to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of its existing facilities, leading to the formulation of a strategic long-term master plan. This initiative has culminated in the architectural design and construction of a new Middle School and STEAM Facility.
The layout of the new buildings is thoughtfully arranged, positioned on opposite sides of an expansive athletic field and green space. Architecturally, they complement each other through the incorporation of undulating curves that interact harmoniously. The design includes planters that accentuate the curvature of the facility, cascading with native species, providing visual interest and breaking up the building plane. The dynamic interplay of these elements is further accentuated when the wind or rain introduces movement to the lush greenery.
In keeping with a commitment to local aesthetics and sustainability, the interiors of the atrium feature bamboo, creating a unique ambiance reminiscent of being within a tree’s core. Each level of the building serves as a metaphorical branch extending into the surrounding natural environment, fostering a seamless connection between the educational spaces and nature. Middle School Classrooms and STEAM spaces are organized in clusters around these skylit atria, encouraging collaboration and a sense of belonging.
