The Alfond Coastal Research Center Receives BSA Commendation for Built Design Excellence

Flansburgh is pleased to announce that the Bill ’67 and Peter ’71 Alfond Coastal Research Center has been awarded a Commendation in the Built Design Excellence Awards for Educational Facilities. The honor was presented at the Boston Society of Architects (BSA) Awards Gala, which took place on March 5th at the Omni Boston Hotel Seaport.
The BSA Design Awards program celebrates exemplary innovation in the built environment, investment from committed clients, and the unique power of architecture to design buildings and spaces that transform communities and shape the way we live. The BSA honors projects that embody the values of the AIA Framework of Design Excellence and the BSA’s vision of building a just and sustainable Boston, together. The Flansburgh team, was joined by Governor’s Academy Chief Financial Officer Jon Douglas, to celebrate this achievement.
The jury shared the following summary about the Alfond Coastal Research Center. “This beautiful project shows clear and elegant design gestures made because of the goals of designing for equitable communities and accessibility and meets the AIA 2030 challenge. Sustainability is woven throughout the design, from stormwater bio-infiltration basins and energy-efficient systems to a net-zero-ready electrical infrastructure, ensuring responsible resource use. There is a strong commitment to experiential learning that is evident in the layout and programming. Accessible walkways and outdoor gathering spaces allow for direct interaction with the marsh ecosystems.”
