Lili`uokalani Trust is a private operating foundation founded in 1909, for the benefit of Native Hawaiian children. The Trust serves approximately 10,000 children annually through direct services. This flagship center will be a resource for native Hawaii youth to pursue their passions. It incorporates a teaching kitchen and cafe, maker-spaces, visual art studios, music recording suite, dance studio, black box theatre and gymnasium. The building is designed to foster connections across these disciplines so young adults interested in one area might become intrigued by another. A new enclosed gymnasium will bedded to the roof and the existing roof-top pool will be remade as a culturally appropriate contemplative garden. The exterior walls will be replaced with glass to highlight the center’s many activities. Through an extensive renovation of the former Honolulu Club, racquetball and squash courts will be converted into a black box theatre and music recital hall. The existing fitness space will be reimagined as a dance studio.
